Margaret Farquhar, a Scottish politician and the first woman to serve as Lord Provost of Aberdeen, died on February 27, 2026.
Born in Aberdeen as Margaret Burnett on 14 March 1930, she was educated at Broomhill Primary, Ruthrieston Secondary School and Webster’s College. She became a clerk at the North of Scotland College of Agriculture in 1948 and later worked with a hauliers’ firm.
In 1951 she married William Farquhar and had a family and grandchildren. Elected to Aberdeen District Council in 1971 as a Scottish Labour Party member, she served on the planning committee, represented the council on external committees, was vice-chair from 1994 to 1996, and became a director of Aberdeen Citizens’ Advice Bureau in 1986.
