According to Arabic-language biographical sources, he served as the party’s secretary-general from 1988 to 2003. Born on March 30, 1943, he came from a nationalist family; his father was the activist and trade unionist Ahmed Tlili.
In his youth, he was active in the student left in France, where he helped establish the group Tunisia Red, and he was expelled from France during the events of May 1968. In the early 1980s, he drew closer to the authorities at a time when they were seeking an alternative leadership for the General Union of Tunisian Workers, and he was said to have maintained a good relationship with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
