Genova entered the Assembly in a 1985 special election to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Edward K. Gill, then won full terms in 1985 and 1987 alongside running mate Chuck Hardwick. In 1987, he sponsored a bill that would have made English New Jersey’s official language.
