Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1965, she became associated with the Young British Artists and was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997 for From Life, shown at Tramway in Glasgow. Borland studied Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art and later took an MA at the University of Ulster in 1988.

Her career spanned cross-disciplinary work that engaged with medical science and forensics, and she lived and worked in Kilcreggan, Argyll. She also served as a BALTIC Professor at the BxNU Institute of Contemporary Art and was awarded a fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
