Mohabbat Jan Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi politician and former army major general who also served as home minister and director general of DGFI, died on August 24, 2026, aged 92.
He was known for a career that moved between military service and public office, and he trained at the Pakistan Military Academy before joining the Pakistan Army in September 1955 as a second lieutenant. A coursemate of Ziaur Rahman, he later held staff appointments, worked in military training schools and served in Inter-Services Intelligence.
During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he was based in Pakistan and was repatriated to Bangladesh after the war ended.
