Shigeaki Mori Historian dead at age 88

Shigeaki Mori, a Japanese historian and atomic bomb survivor, died on March 14, 2026.

He was 88. Born in Hiroshima on March 29, 1937, Mori was known for his research into Allied prisoners of war who died during air raids on Japan.

As a boy, he survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945, and later attended Chuo University, where he studied economics. He also worked at a brokerage and as a salesman for a piano manufacturer. His hug with U.S. President Barack Obama during the president’s 2016 visit to Hiroshima was reported in multiple countries.

Shigeaki Mori (森 重昭, Mori Shigeaki; March 29, 1937 – March 14, 2026) was a Japanese historian from Hiroshima and a survivor of its atomic bombing.
