Wittkower, a British-born Canadian–American physicist and technology executive known for his contributions to ion implantation technology and the semiconductor industry, died on March 14, 2026, at the age of 91. Born Andrew Benedict Wittkower in London on November 7, 1934, he moved with his family to Montreal in 1951.
He earned a BS degree from McGill University in 1955 and an MS degree from the University of Cambridge in 1959. Wittkower began his career as a research scientist at High Voltage Engineering Corporation, where he worked on ion sources and charge-changing collisions in particle accelerators and published more than 100 scientific papers. He later co-founded Extrion Corporation, which developed one of the first production ion implanters for semiconductor manufacturing.
