Isao Tsukamoto, a Japanese academic and translator, died on August 20, 2026, aged 92.

He was a Japanese scholar of Korean language and a former professor at Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he joined the university’s newly created Korean language department in 1963 as a full-time lecturer.

Over more than two decades, he helped complete the “Korean-Japanese Dictionary” in 1986, a work noted for its roughly 210,000 entries and for becoming the world’s largest Korean-Japanese dictionary. The dictionary received the 1986 Japan Translation Culture Award.
