E. Easterling, the English classical scholar and expert on Sophocles, died on August 18, 2026, aged 92.

Born Patricia Elizabeth Fairfax in Blackburn on March 11, 1934, she studied Classics at Newnham College, Cambridge, graduating with first-class honours and distinction in 1955. After lecturing at the University of Manchester and teaching in the Cambridge Classics Faculty, she returned to Cambridge in 1994 as Regius Professor of Greek, becoming the 36th person to hold the chair and the first woman to do so. Easterling was also associated with Newnham College and was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.
