Okuda, born in Tsu on December 29, 1932, graduated from Hitotsubashi University in 1955 and joined Toyota soon afterward. After four decades with the company, he became its president in 1995, a post he held until 1999, when he moved to the chairmanship, serving in that role until 2006.

He also took part in Japanese business policy circles, including service on the prime minister’s Economic Strategy Council in 1998 and as chairman of the Japan Federation of Employers’ Associations that same year.
