Yukio Shimomura, the Japanese football player and manager who represented Japan as both a player and coach, died on August 13, 2026, aged 94.
Born in Hiroshima on January 25, 1932, he attended Shudo Junior & Senior High School before joining his local club, Toyo Industries, in 1950. Shimomura spent his playing career with the club until 1961, during which it reached the Emperor’s Cup final and finished second in 1954 and 1957.
On October 9, 1955, he made his international debut for Japan against Burma, and in 1956 he was selected for the Melbourne Olympics, where he served as a reserve goalkeeper behind Yoshio Furukawa.
