Michael Tate, the Australian politician, senator and Catholic priest who served in the Senate from 1978 to 1993, died on June 5, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born Michael Carter Tate in Sydney on July 6, 1945, he was also a legal academic and later served as an ambassador. Tate studied law at the University of Tasmania after attending St Virgilโs College in Hobart, and went on to hold academic and public roles in Tasmania and national politics.
He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia.
