Konrad Jarausch, the German–American historian and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor, died on September 1, 2026, aged 85.
Born in Magdeburg, Germany, on August 14, 1941, he built his career as a scholar of modern German history and taught as the Lurcy Professor of European Civilization at Chapel Hill. His work first drew attention for studies of Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, and he later turned to East Germany, German reunification and cultural democratization.
Jarausch also served as president of the German Studies Association from 1985 to 1986 and edited Zeithistorische Forschungen/Studies in Contemporary History.
