A former East German international, he was born in Frankenberg on April 8, 1943, and became one of the leading figures in his country’s game. Vogel played for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1961 to 1970 and for FC Carl Zeiss Jena from 1970 to 1982, making 440 combined top-flight appearances, a record in East German football at the time.
He earned 69 caps and scored 24 goals for East Germany and was part of the squad at the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He also later worked as a coach, including a spell with Hannover 96.
