Alan Knight, the English footballer and coach who spent nearly his entire senior career with Portsmouth, died on September 1, 2026, aged 65.
A goalkeeper, he made 683 league appearances and 801 in all competitions for the club between 1978 and 2000, a record for a single club that surpassed Peter Bonetti’s mark for Chelsea. Knight helped Portsmouth reach the 1992 FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to Liverpool on penalties, and he was the second-longest serving player in the club’s history behind Jimmy Dickinson.
Born in Balham and educated at Ernest Bevin College in Tooting, he was capped at under-21 level and later worked as a coach, including spells with Horndean and Dorchester Town. He was appointed MBE.
