Ritu Khullar, a Canadian jurist and judge who served as chief justice of Alberta, died on September 3, 2026, aged 62.

At the time of her death, she also sat on the Court of Appeal for the Northwest Territories and the Nunavut Court of Appeal. Appointed to the Court of Appeal in November 2022 and sworn in the following February, she had previously served on the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta from 2017.

Before becoming a judge, Khullar was a labour, human rights, administrative and constitutional lawyer and took part in landmark Supreme Court of Canada cases including Vriend v. Alberta and R. v. Ewanchuk. Born in 1964 in Fort Vermilion, Alberta, she was raised in La Crete and Morinville and attended Old Scona Academic High School in Edmonton.
