Ramón Espinar Gallego, a Spanish politician and former member of the Assembly of Madrid, died on September 3, 2026, aged 72.

A member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, he was born in Úbeda in 1954 and became a prominent figure in Madrid regional politics. He served as mayor of Leganés, sat in the Assembly of Madrid from 1983 to 1995, and presided over the chamber from 1983 to 1987.

Espinar later held regional cabinet posts as minister of culture from 1987 to 1991 and minister of finance from 1991 to 1995. In 1995, he was appointed an adviser at Caja Madrid, a position that later drew scrutiny after a credit card scandal in which he was sentenced in 2017 to one year in prison.
