Libor Balák, the Czech painter and illustrator, died on September 2, 2026, aged 65.

Born in Brno on February 10, 1961, he also worked as a draughtsman, comic-book artist and creator of computer games. While studying at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Brno, he attended private lectures in ethnography and anthropology with Jan Jelínek, and later consulted prehistorical reconstructions with the paleobotanist Antonín Hluštík.

His work was shaped by collaboration with the anthropologist Josef Wolf and the illustrator Zdeněk Burian. After finishing school, he joined the geological and paleontological department of the Moravian Museum in Brno in 1980. He taught at a people’s art school from 1985 to 1987 and at a secondary school from 2004. From 2010, he also worked with the game developers Pterodon and Illusion Softworks on animated drawings for 2D and 3D computer games, including Vietcong.
