Her research helped develop open systems theory as a framework for organisational and community change, and she was associated with the Search Conference and the Participative Design Workshop as part of a two-stage model of active adaptation. Emery also systematised the Search Conference method in her 1982 monograph Searching, later substantially revised in Searching: The theory and practice of making cultural change (1999).
