Goble, an American scientist and academic and 1996 Ig Nobel Prize winner, died on March 18, 2026. Born George Harry Goble on December 11, 1952, he was a staff member at the Purdue University Engineering Computer Network.
He was commonly known as ghg, using that as a login ID and signature in digital communications from the 1970s. In 1981, he helped wire together the backplanes of two DEC VAX-11/780 systems to create the first multi-CPU Unix computer, work that later informed the 4.3 BSD Unix release.
