Born in Athens on August 5, 1937, he taught at universities in Greece, the United States, France and Mexico. Tsoucalas also served as president of the National Centre for Social Research and was a state deputy for SYRIZA.
He came from a prominent legal and political family, the grandson of Constantine Tsoukalas, a professor of criminal law at the University of Athens, and the son of Angelos Tsoukalas, a lawyer and politician who served as an MP for Athens, mayor of Athens with the support of the Left, and justice minister from 1970 to 1973 during the military junta.
