Born in Lachelle in 1953, he worked at the National Center for Scientific Research and was attached to the archaeology laboratory of the École normale supérieure. Brunaux specialised in the religion and society of Gaul in the Iron Age, and his excavation work in Picardy uncovered some of the largest known deposits of Iron Age weaponry from northern Europe.
