Shaul Mishal, the Israeli political scientist who studied Arab and Palestinian politics, died on August 18, 2026, aged 81.

Born in Baghdad in 1945, he later made aliyah with his family and went on to study political science, philosophy and sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned his doctorate. Mishal built his career at Tel Aviv University as professor emeritus of political science and also led the Middle Eastern studies program at IDC Herzliya.

He founded and directed the Center for the Study of Arab Society in Israel, and his work as a researcher and author focused on Arab and Islamic political cultures and Palestinian politics. His books included studies of Shiite leadership and Hamas.
