Charles Bailleul French linguist and missionary dead at age 98

Charles Bailleul, a French linguist and Roman Catholic missionary with the White Fathers, died on February 9, 2026, in Bry-sur-Marne, France, at the age of 98.

Born in Lille on December 21, 1927, he was also known as Baabilen Kulubali. He served as vicar of a parish in Kolokani, Mali, from 1986 to 1992.

From 1992 to 2009, he took part in language-related projects that included translations of dictionaries, proverbs, a book on medicinal plants, and illustrated tales.

Charles Bailleul (French: [ʃaʁl bajœl]; 21 December 1927 – 9 February 2026) was a French linguist and Roman Catholic missionary, a member of the White Fathers.
