Věra Linhartová, the Czech writer and art historian, died on June 26, 2026, at age 88 in Paris.
Born in Brno on March 22, 1938, she studied art history at Masaryk University in Brno and aesthetics at Charles University in Prague. Linhartová worked in the art gallery at Hluboká Castle and was active in Prague’s surrealist circle from 1962 to 1965, while also contributing to the writers’ journal Tvář.
She moved to Paris in 1968 and began writing in French the following year. In 1972, she became the first female juror of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, then known as Books Abroad.
