Milan Knížák, the Czech artist, musician and performer who led the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and later directed the National Gallery Prague, died on July 26, 2026.
Born in Plzeň on April 19, 1940, he became a prominent figure in Czech art as a performance artist, sculptor, installation artist, graphic artist, art theorist and pedagogue, with work associated with Fluxus. He studied at Charles University and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he served as rector from 1990 to 1997 and as a professor of intermedia from 1990.
Knížák also headed the National Gallery Prague from 1999 to 2011. He received the Czech Medal of Merit and was married to Sonia Švecová.
