Born in Hrodna on July 25, 1947, he was a physicist, ethnologist, university teacher, historian, mathematician and human rights defender as well as a politician. Milinkievič studied at Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, where he later worked, and he also became known as the opposition’s joint candidate in Belarus’s 2006 presidential election, when the leading opposition parties nominated him to run against President Alexander Lukashenko.
