Gianpaolo Bellini, the Italian experimental physicist known for his work in low-background neutrino detection and the Borexino experiment, died on August 12, 2026, aged 91.
Born in Milan on June 12, 1935, he was an emeritus professor of physics at the University of Milan and an emeritus scientist of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare. Bellini led the Borexino collaboration at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory, where it carried out precision studies of solar neutrinos, including the first direct evidence of the CNO cycle, as well as measurements of geoneutrinos.
Earlier in his career, he developed silicon active targets and micro-vertex techniques that helped make the first lifetime measurements of charmed hadrons at fixed-target experiments.
