Laney, an American minister, professor and diplomat who served as U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 1993 to 1996 and as president of Emory University from 1977 to 1993, died on August 13, 2026, aged 98.
Laney was also dean of the Candler School of Theology at Emory. Born in 1927, he studied at Yale University and Yale Divinity School, and later received the Wilbur Cross Medal.
