Pavel Jungwirth, a Czech physical chemist and academic, died on July 23, 2026, at the age of 60.
Born in Prague on May 20, 1966, he studied at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University and went on to build his career at several institutions of the Czech Academy of Sciences and at his alma mater. From 2000, he was a professor at Charles University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, and since 2004 he headed the Senior Research Group at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
He also served as a senior editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry from 2009. Jungwirth became widely known for research into the explosive reaction between alkali metals and water, work that pointed to a Coulomb explosion and helped explain the brief blue flash seen during the reaction.
