Vladimír Kopecký, the Czech painter, graphic artist and glass artist who taught at university, died October 8, 2026, aged 94.

Born in Svojanov on November 26, 1931, he wanted to become a painter from the age of five. His family moved to Uhříněves in 1934 and later, near the end of the war, to Děčín.

In 1946, he began studying at the State Vocational Glass School in Kamenický Šenov. He went on to study monumental painting and glass at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague from 1949 to 1956, in the studio of Josef Kaplický. During school practice in Lednické Rovne, Slovakia, in 1952, a grinding wheel broke while he was working on glass and struck him in the face. He underwent more than 20 plastic surgeries. Kopecký became a university professor and, from 1990 to 2008, headed the Glass Studio at the Prague academy. His work encompassed painting, graphic art and glass, alongside a teaching career at the institution where he had trained.
