Paolo Romeo, an Italian priest, cardinal and archbishop emeritus of Palermo, died October 25, 2026, aged 88.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to the see of Palermo on December 19, 2006, and Romeo served as the city’s archbishop before becoming archbishop emeritus. Born February 20, 1938, he was the fifth of nine children.

After completing primary school, he entered seminary, where he began studying theology. In 1959, his bishop sent him to Rome to continue his academic studies. Romeo earned a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University. His education also included the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. Those studies in theology and canon law formed the academic background of a career in the Catholic Church that brought him to the leadership of the Palermo archdiocese.
