Andrei Georgievich Doroshkevich, a Russian theoretical astrophysicist and cosmologist, died October 26, 2026, aged 89.

Born January 22, 1937, he was identified as both Russian and former Soviet, and studied at Moscow State University’s Faculty of Physics. He worked at the Lebedev Physical Institute, where he headed the laboratory on the physics of the early universe.

His institutional role and research were thus associated with a field concerned with the universe’s earliest period. Doroshkevich is best known for work with Igor Novikov, published in 1964, that provided a theoretical basis for the cosmic microwave background radiation and pointed out that it should be experimentally measurable. The history of the finding involved separate theoretical and experimental contributions. T. A. Shmaonov had detected a signal of the radiation experimentally in 1957, seven years before Doroshkevich and Novikov published their work. By then, however, Shmaonov’s result had been forgotten even in the Soviet Union. The 1964 work set out both a theoretical account of the radiation and the prospect of detecting it through experiment, while the earlier observation had not remained part of the scientific record known at the time. Doroshkevich’s career combined research in theoretical astrophysics and cosmology with leadership of a laboratory devoted to early-universe physics at the Lebedev institute.
