More about Peter Horton

Gender: male.

Education: University of Queensland.

Employer: James Cook University.

Born: July 20, 1945.

Peter Alan Horton, an Australian rugby union international and sport historian, died October 22, 2026, aged 81.

Born in Brixton, London, on July 20, 1945, and raised in England, he attended Tulse Hill School and St Luke’s College, Exeter. A hooker, he played for London club Streatham-Croydon and represented Surrey at county level before moving to Australia at 24.

He settled into the game in Newcastle, New South Wales, playing for Newcastle Waratahs while working as sportsmaster at Gateshead High School. His path from English club and county rugby to the Australian national side brought him 19 Wallabies caps between 1974 and 1979. Horton made his international debut against the All Blacks in Sydney, and his final year in the team coincided with Australia’s Bledisloe Cup title. The span of his playing career thus connected rugby communities in England and Australia, from London and Surrey to Newcastle and the national side. Horton studied at the University of Queensland and was employed by James Cook University. He was also a sport historian, a role distinct from his record as a player and international representative.
