Yusef Majidzadeh, an Iranian archaeologist, died on October 19, 2026, aged 90.

A native of Tabriz, he built his career around the study of Iran’s archaeological past. He directed excavations at Ozbaki, Qabristan and Jiroft, and was employed by the University of Tehran.

He retired from the university after the Iranian Revolution and later lived in France. At a 2007 seminar in Kerman titled “Jiroft, the Cradle of Oriental Civilization,” Majidzadeh discussed the significance of the Jiroft discoveries. He dated the region’s civilization to 2700 BCE and described its third-millennium civilization as the “missing link” archaeologists had long sought. He also said that recognizing Jiroft’s importance did not mean denying Mesopotamian civilization. His excavation leadership and public presentation of the site placed Jiroft at the center of his archaeological work, alongside the projects at Ozbaki and Qabristan. Majidzadeh was also identified as an anthropologist. His name is rendered in English in several forms, including Yousef Majidzadeh and Youssef Madjidzadeh.
