More about Keith Bailey

Born: 7 October 1961.

Place of birth: Toronto.

Gender: male.

Keith Bailey, a Canadian professional soccer player whose clubs included Bradford City and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, died October 21, 2026, aged 65.

He was born in Toronto, Ontario, on October 7, 1961, to English parents. When he was six months old, his family returned to England and settled in a rural part of West Yorkshire.

More than a decade later, scouts there took notice of him. In 1977, Bailey was selected for several local and district teams. The next year, at 16, he signed with Bradford City, then a Fourth Division club. His opportunity with the Tampa Bay Rowdies came during a visit to his aunt and uncle, Ann and Norman Bailey, in St. Petersburg, Florida. In May 1980, they persuaded the North American Soccer League side to give him a tryout. Rowdies coach Gordon Jago was impressed and signed Bailey to a three-year contract in early June. His early soccer career thus included a signing with an English league club as a teenager and, two years later, a contract with the Florida-based NASL team. The available account traces that opportunity to his relatives’ persistence in arranging the tryout while he was visiting them on holiday.
