Robin Stubbs, the English professional footballer, died October 25, 2026, aged 85.
Born Robin Gregory Stubbs in Quinton, Birmingham, on April 22, 1941, he played as a centre-forward and made nearly 400 Football League appearances, scoring 170 goals for Birmingham City, Torquay United and Bristol Rovers. His career included two spells at Torquay, where he arrived aged 85 for a then club-record fee of £6,000.
The transfer set a new mark for the club at the time, and Stubbs went on to spend six seasons there. Over that period he scored at a rate of better than a goal every two games. In 2007, Torquay supporters selected him in the club’s PFA Fans’ Favourites poll. Earlier, with Birmingham City, he featured in the early rounds of the club’s 1958–60 and 1960–61 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup campaigns, but did not play in either final. His Football League career took in three clubs, with Torquay featuring both before and after his time at Bristol Rovers. Stubbs was formerly married to Anthea Redfern, who later married Bruce Forsyth and assisted him on the BBC game show The Generation Game.
