Dale Brown, an American college basketball coach, died October 23, 2026, aged 90.
His full name was Dale Duward Brown; he was born October 31, 1935, in Minot, North Dakota. Raised in a family of limited means, he and his two older sisters were brought up by their mother, Agnes, who worked in domestic service; the children also worked various jobs.
Brown graduated from St. Leo’s High School in 1953, where he competed in football, basketball and track. He attended Minot State Teacher’s College, now Minot State University, and the University of Oregon. At Minot State, he earned 12 varsity letters across football, basketball and track, a distinction no other athlete there achieved in those three sports. He scored 1,140 points in three varsity basketball seasons. Brown spent 25 years as head coach of the LSU Tigers, whose teams reached the Final Four in 1981 and 1986. He was among the NCAA’s most vocal critics, saying it “legislated against human dignity and practiced monumental hypocrisy.” His career at LSU and his criticism of the association made him a prominent figure in college basketball.
