Phil O’Callaghan, the Irish rugby union international prop, died October 25, 2026, aged 80.
Born in Cork on March 25, 1946, he was known in rugby as “Philo.” Raised in the city, he began as a soccer player and took up rugby union in his teenage years. His senior career began with Dolphin RFC, the Ballyphehane club, before he went on to represent Ireland.
O’Callaghan won 21 caps, playing as a prop on either side of the scrum. He made his international debut against Australia at Lansdowne Road in 1967, then toured Australia later that year. He was part of the Ireland side that defeated the hosts in Sydney, a notable result on the tour. His final Test came against the All Blacks in Wellington during Ireland’s 1976 tour. The dates of his first and last Tests mark nearly a decade in the international game, taking him from a home debut to an appearance overseas. Across those milestones, his career encompassed club rugby in Cork and appearances for Ireland on both sides of the scrum.
