Pete Banaszak, an American football player who was a running back for the Oakland Raiders, died October 24, 2026, aged 82.
Born Peter Andrew Banaszak on May 21, 1944, in Crivitz, Wisconsin, he attended Crivitz High School. There, he played football, basketball and track and field and was an honor-roll student.
On the football team, he played halfback and linebacker and earned all-conference recognition. Football also connected his childhood to the Green Bay Packers: his father, an avid fan, took him to games and held season tickets, which were eventually passed to Banaszak’s sister. He later played college football for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami. Banaszak spent his professional career with the Oakland Raiders as a running back. His Raiders service began in the American Football League in 1966 and continued there through 1969; he then played for the team in the National Football League from 1970 through 1978. His career with Oakland thus spanned the team’s years in both leagues.
