Lorn Cowie, Lord Cowie, the Scottish rugby union player and jurist who served as a senator of the College of Justice, died October 23, 2026, aged 100.

Born William Lorn Kerr Cowie in Glasgow on June 1, 1926, he studied at Clare College and played for West of Scotland before representing Scotland internationally. His legal career began when he joined the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh in 1952.

He served as an Advocate Depute in the Crown Office until 1967, when he was made Queen’s Counsel. Cowie returned to the Advocate Depute role in 1969 and held it until 1977. That year, he became a Senator of the College of Justice, a position he held until 1994. His professional path thus ran from advocacy and Crown Office service to a senior judicial appointment, while his sporting record included both club rugby and appearances for Scotland. Across those roles, Cowie’s career connected Scottish legal institutions with the national game; the dates of his appointments and service mark more than four decades of work in the law, alongside his place in Scottish rugby.
