Nelson played his club football with Ballyboden St Enda’s, first representing the club in juvenile and underage grades before progressing to its adult team. Between 2009 and 2019, he won three Dublin Senior Football Championship medals and two Leinster Club Senior Football Championship medals. That final brought the side the All-Ireland title, complementing its county and provincial honours. Nelson also represented Dublin at inter-county level as a member of the senior football team. His playing career thus encompassed school, college, club and county football, and included both Gaelic football and hurling during his school years. The milestones recorded across his time with Ballyboden ranged from his early youth grades through adult competition, with the club’s 2016 national final win among its notable achievements during his decade of county and provincial success.
