Michael Canavan, an Irish nationalist businessman and politician, died October 8, 2026, aged 102.
Born in Derry in October 1924, he attended St Columb’s College before entering business. By the 1960s, his interests in the city included a chain of bookmakers, a salmon-processing factory and a pub, alongside his involvement in civic affairs.
In 1965, Canavan served as treasurer of the University for Derry Committee and worked with John Hume in efforts to attract industry to the area. He also advocated credit unions, co-founding Derry Credit Union with Hume and chairing it from 1963 to 1966. After his term, he spent a year as a director of the Irish League of Credit Unions. Canavan’s public role grew amid local civic organizing: in 1968 he was elected chairman of the Derry Citizens’ Action Committee, and he later became prominent in the Derry Citizens’ Defence Association and chaired the Derry Citizens’ Central Council. His business activity, credit-union work and involvement in these organizations connected him to several strands of Derry’s economic and civic life during the 1960s.
