Chris Welsh, Australian rock drummer with Died Pretty, died October 8, 2026.
Died Pretty, sometimes known as The Died Pretty, was an Australian alternative rock band formed in Sydney in 1983 by singer Ron Peno and guitarist and backing vocalist Brett Myers. A circa-1990 photograph identifies Welsh in the band’s lineup alongside John Hoey, Peno, Myers and Steve Clark.
The group’s music drew on early electric Bob Dylan and psychedelic rock, including influences from the Velvet Underground and Television. Its work found a particular following on the alternative scene. Three of its 1990s albums—Doughboy Hollow, Trace and Sold—appeared on the Australian Recording Industry Association Albums Chart. The band was managed by John Needham, owner of Citadel Records, its main label. Died Pretty’s listed periods of activity were 1983–2002, 2008–09, 2012 and 2016–23, a chronology that reflects the group’s returns after breaks. Across those years, the band maintained a place in Australia’s alternative rock landscape while releasing albums that also reached the national chart. Welsh is identified as the group’s drummer, and the surviving lineup photograph places him among the musicians associated with Died Pretty around 1990.
