Pavel Půta, a Czech guitarist, singer-songwriter and lyricist, died October 12, 2026, aged 78.
Born in Pačejov on March 14, 1948, he was a bassist in the orchestra of Svatopluk Čech during the 1970s. He later became known on Plzeň’s folk scene as one half of a duo with Stanislav Staněk.
The two musicians released the single Červená knihovna in 1979. Their work did not provide enough income for them to make a living, and their paths then diverged: Staněk accepted a position as guitarist in Petr Novák’s band, while Půta took an engagement at Divadlo Pod lampou. He later founded the theater studio Parník with Andy Seidl, extending his work into theater. Půta also collaborated with illustrator and children’s author Vítězslava Klimtová, composing music for many of her poems for children. The songs appeared on the album Ukolébavky lesních skřítků, aneb pohlazení před usnutím. His work ranged from folk performance and songwriting to theater and musical settings of children’s poetry, spanning several different settings for his music and lyrics.
