František Laurin, the Czech theatre and film director, teacher and director emeritus of the Prague Vinohrady Theater, died on July 31, 2026, at age 91.
Born in Prague on November 12, 1934, he studied directing at DAMU after briefly beginning studies at the Czech Technical University in Prague and graduated in 1959. Before finishing his studies, he joined Realistické divadlo Zdeňka Nejedlého as a director in 1958 and remained there until 1981.
He later served as a director of drama at the National Theatre in Prague from November 1981 until the end of 1987, and in January 1988 became the 13th director of the Vinohrady Theatre, a post he held briefly before the position was opened to public competition after November 1989.
