Maureen Duffy, the English poet, playwright and novelist, died on May 28, 2026, at the age of 92, with her death announced that day.
Born Maureen Patricia Duffy in Worthing, Sussex, on October 21, 1933, she wrote fiction, poetry, drama and nonfiction, and was also known as an activist. Her work and campaigning often focused on gay rights, animal rights and the interests of authors.
Duffy was educated at King’s College London and was a Fellow of both the English Association and the Royal Society of Literature. In 2025, she was named the inaugural winner of the Royal Society of Literature’s Pioneer Prize, and earlier received the Benson Medal from the society for her lifelong writing.
