Ron Smith, the English footballer who played on the left wing for Altrincham, Crewe Alexandra and Southport, died on August 17, 2026, aged 90.

Born in Liverpool on 7 June 1936, he came through Liverpool’s ranks after trials with Stoke City and signed amateur terms with the club in 1955 before turning professional in 1957. He never made a first-team appearance for Liverpool and moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1959, where he made his Football League debut and spent two seasons.

Smith joined Crewe Alexandra in July 1961, helped them win promotion from the Fourth Division in 1962–63, and later moved to Port Vale for £6,500 in October 1963. In April 1965 he joined Southport, where he again played a part in promotion from the fourth tier, before ending his career with a 13-year record of 62 goals in 426 appearances.
