Silvia Buendía, an Ecuadorian journalist, lawyer and civil rights activist, died on August 24, 2026, at age 58.
Born in Guayaquil on October 9, 1967, she graduated in law from the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil and went on to become a columnist, television host and leading voice in Ecuador’s feminist movement. Buendía was known for campaigning against femicide and for LGBTQ+ rights, including support for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Ecuador.
She also served as a spokesperson for the LGBTI Diversity Network of Ecuador and took part in a 2016 civil society delegation to Geneva that contributed to a United Nations report on LGBTQ+ rights in the country.
