She wrote on Marathi language issues in magazines and newspapers and was known for arguing that literary and intellectual writing should use standard Marathi. Born on June 21, 1925, she also spoke publicly about the influence of foreign words in everyday speech.
She married Dadi Shaikh in 1950 and, according to her own account in an interview, changed her name from Jerusha Ruben to Yasmin Shaikh without changing her religion. She was the mother of two daughters, Dr. Shama and Prof. Ruksana.
